REFUND OR REGRET …

taxesREFUND OR REGRET …

It is that time of the year again … Tax season! I was doing some research on using a professional tax accountant to help me with my taxes this year. I usually use Turbo Tax but I have done a lot of investing this year with buying a home and all of the tax credits that come alone with it. Also I have school tax credits, at least I think I do!?

I just want to make sure I am not missing out on any tax credits that may be out there.  So, do I need someone to prepare my taxes for me?  Or should I use Turbo Tax?  Here is a list of simple questions to determine if you need help with your taxes.  If you answer YES to any of these questions or you just are not confident that you will not make an error, then it might be a good idea to pay a little extra this year and hire some tax help.

  • Do you know what you can count as a deduction?
  • Do you understand the tax process well enough?
  • Did you buy and/or sell stock this year for a gain or loss?
  • Do you have freelance or consulting income?
  • Do you provide financial support for someone?

These are just a few questions.  You should really do your research before embarking on your taxes alone.  Get tons of information at www.irs.gov .

A small fee to a professional tax preparer may be worth it to you in the end.

perhaps its just me but i find the process of filing taxes and tax law fascinating. and yes i still hate paying them. i really wish they’d teach a course in our public high schools on tax law and how to successfully file your own. that’s actually high on my to-do list; finding a good tax class.
