Invest in Yourself

posted by Lacey

healthI would have to say that one of life’s biggest investments is the investment that you make in yourself. If you don’t take care of yourself, then who is going to? (I am not trying to be pessimistic, but taking a realistic point of view). What I mean by investing in yourself is not by just financial investments but an overall health investment.

Do you exercise and eat right? Do you go to the doctor to make sure you are up to par? By making an investment in yourself or taking care of your health you are actively investing more time onto your own longevity and happiness. What do you think? What could you do or have been doing to make sure your investment is going the distance?

Tips for Landing a Job in the Current Economy

posted by Lacey

job-searchLately, I have been looking into other potential job opportunities. I want to be noticed through the piles of applications that many companies are receiving. In order to do this, I thought to myself “What are some of the attributes that companies are looking for and what are some tips to help land a job?” I have been researching for these tips and have come up with a few good ones that might be helpful, not only to me, but for others.

1. Staying motivated throughout the application process is important. Know you will land a job and continue to have this attitude with each job you apply for.

2. Take the time needed and careful consideration when applying for each position. Is your resume tailored to the position you are applying for? Your resume might need to be refreshed.

3. If you are granted an interview, make sure that you know the position and company you have applied for. Knowledge can show that you have taken the time to apply and have done your homework!

4. Sell yourself in the interview. Let them know how you can contribute to their company and help them with future endeavors.

5. Stay positive and be persistent.

I hope this helps with your job search and good luck!

America First’s Opt In or Opt Out Program

posted by Lacey

opt-in3We’ve received a lot of questions concerning the Overdraft Courtesy Pay opt-in or opt-out program at here America First. I had a few myself and decided to find out more.

Overdraft Courtesy Pay has two different options for debit card purchases:

Opt in: If you decide to opt in, we will allow for any charges made on your debit card to go through, even if funds are not available in your Checking Account and/or your Line of Credit. In this case, if you opt in, the charge will be processed and you will be assessed a $20 fee. This is available for members who want this emergency money available. It allows for the charges to be brought on your account to $500 dollars negative. There is no cost to opt in.

Opt out: If you choose to opt out, then your debit card purchases will not go through if you do not have funds available. If you have no money in your Checking Account and your Line of Credit is maxed out, the charge will not be processed and you will not be assessed the $20 fee — your debit card purchases will be declined.

Let us know if you want to opt in to Overdraft Courtesy Pay. You can come into the branch, call us at 1-800-999-3961, send an email to support@americafirst.com or click to www.americafirst.com/courtesypay to either opt in or opt out. This program does not apply to checks — only to debit cards.

Does this clarify opting in or opting out  to Overdraft Courtesy Pay or what other questions do you have concerning this feature?

Economical Hardship?

Recession Defined on Black

Tons of articles have been written concerning the economical downfall that our country has been faced with and the trouble that the people of the U.S. have had to deal with.

For me, the only time that I have been affected by this downfall is the fluctuating price of gas. I don’t happen to have any money invested in a 401 K or any stocks but I know of several, if not a large amount of people, that have been affected by this downfall.

Have you been affected? What have you done to be more efficient with your money? Have you had to cut anything out financially?

I Challenge YOU!!!!

posted by Lacey

Have you ever wondered, “Where did all of my money go?” Are you a continuous spender of random stuff and then wonder why you had bought what you had in the first place or simply don’t know what you have even bought? Welcome to the world of random spending and it’s effects on your bank account!

92231139With these questions on your mind, I challenge you! I want each of you to think of one thing that you could give up financially for one month. Do you think you can do it? I am not asking or challenging you to not make a car payment for a month or something critical, but to give up something smaller.

For example, I am going to be giving up buying specialty coffees for one month. I tend to be lazy and don’t always want to make my own coffee.  Buying coffee instead of making my own, I tend to spend anywhere from$ 5 to $10 a week! I could be saving up to $40  a month!

With that said, what will you give up for one month? How much could you or how much have you saved?

Memorial Day Weekend

posted by Lacey

So, I was just thinking that Memorial Day is just around the corner. I will have that day off with pay (I know, lucky for me!) and was contemplating what I could go and do that weekend on the cheap. I was thinking of camping but it seems like that is what everyone will be doing. I was possibly wanting to go to Boondock’s because I have never been there but then it again it could cost a lot of money.

So, I wanted to ask all of you what you were planning on doing for Memorial Day? Do you have any ideas of things to do on the cheap?

Earn a Little More Cash…

posted by Lacey

So, I have been thinking of other ways to earn some cash. My husband and I are going to be going to a foreign country in August. We have been saving money but I would like to have some extra money saved as an emergency fund. I just want to be able to have money available to have “just in case.” I have been trying to brainstorm other ways to make some extra cash without getting another job because that would interfer with us leaving. So far, I have come up with:
1. Clean out our home and have a yard sale.
2. Selling my prom dresses from high school.
3. Offer up my babysitting services.
Other than these ideas, I am having trouble coming up with other ones. What have you done to make a little extra cash? What are some ways to either save money or make some extra money?

To Vacation or Not to Vacation?

posted by Lacey

86511200My husband and I recently needed to do a double take on our vacation plans. The vacation we had originally planned was going to be a two week trip across country. This sounded like a great idea and we have been saving money for this trip since last year. Our concern came when we saw the gas prices rise (again)! So, we needed to recalculate our spending. Did we really want to spend $1000.00 on gas just to take a trip?  We decided this was not what we wanted to do. We looked into trips we could take in a closer proximity to where we live. We decided on taking a trip to Yellowstone.

The point is, a little sensible cost saving doesn’t ruin a vacation.  In my view, the two biggest pleasures of vacationing are getting a break from work and hanging out with my family. Those work just fine being closer to home.

What about you, have you had to rethink your spending habits in order to achieve a similiar affect?

Simple Ways to Save on Your Bills

posted by Lacey

Have you ever thought about how much you are paying each month on your bills? What about your interest rates on all of your loans? There are several tips that are offered on doughroller.net but here are just a few.

1.  How much are you paying for your phone bill? You should look into how much you are paying for your current plan and how much other plans cost. Look into your history on your phone use. Are you using the total amount of minutes that you are paying for? Does the phone company you are currently with offer roll over minutes? If you are not using your total minutes and total amount of text that you are signed up for, then you should maybe consider switching to a smaller plan. You could also consider combining your phone plan with your internet and cable in order to save you more money each month.

2.  Interest on loans can add up over time and so it’s important to know what kind of an interest rate you are recieving. You can talk to a loan officer at any time and find out if you are able to receive a better rate on your loan. This will help you to pay less in the long run on your loans.

3.  Do you like to read and rent movies? Have you ever thought about going to your local library for these items? This may be helpful in keeping your spending habits in check if you are able to rent these items for free. You can usually check out an item from the library longer than you can from the local movie store and the rental fee, if it is late, tends to be cheaper as well! And if you are like me when it comes to books, I like to read them one time and don’t tend to reread them and so the library is the perfect way to get my hobby in without over spending.

What to do now?

navigationI am going to be graduating this May from college with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Since, I am graduating I am trying to figure out my next step. I am definitely considering looking into career and job positions that correlate with my degree. I feel a little bit scared because this is going to be the next big step in my life.

I want to be successful.   It will be a journey marked with challenges, crossing milestones and moving forward — in other words really growing up!  Even a genius cannot clearly define his or her destiny, but anybody who has a clear vision, clearly defined goals and determination can achieve success by certain actions.

What are you planning on doing after you graduate? What is your next big step in life?  Where will your journey take you?
