Verna Oller, little old lady and secret stock picker, leaves small town $4.5 million

posted by YNF

Verna Oller was feisty and frugal to the very end of her 98 years — and the children of Long Beach, Wash., will forever be grateful.

Oller, who refused to even purchase showlaces or even cut her own hair. The former fish filleter amassed $4.5 million through savvy stock picks — she was a master investor. She went to the library and read Barons and the Wall Stree Journal. She donated all of her investment savings to her home town so it could build the swimming pool she never had as a kid, that was her main goal, along with scholarships and grants for local teachers.

From ABC News:

The sturdy old lady with no formal education amassed a not-so-small fortune: $4.5 million. It was up over $5 million before the recession. Before she died, she directed Guy Glenn to spend every cent of it, but not on her, on her home town.

“I think we could all learn a lot from her,” nursing home owner Andrea Nooman said in a segment aired on ABC News. “She was very simple but very kind and giving.”

West Haven Hawk Walk — Miss Rodeo Utah

posted by YNF

Today was the West Haven Elementary School Relay for Life Hawk Walk. There were hundreds of kids age Kindergarten through Sixth Grade who came and walked to raise money with America First Credit Union for the American Cancer Society. They were also walking in honor of their two school teachers who are cancer survivors.
The walk was real fun. Some of the laps had themes; for example skipping, walking backwards, changing directions, crazy eights, walking through the human tunnel, boogie dancing, and many others. The kids were laughing and having a good time and they were served water, punch, and cookies by America First Credit Union.

America First Credit Union is a sponsor for Miss Rodeo Utah and they do a lot to give back to the community as well. I appreciate all that they do.

Viva La Taco Bell

posted by YNF

tacoTaco Bell’s 89 cent burritos and 79 cent tacos have been in the market for years, making the dollar menus at other fast food restaurants still look expensive.

Well, Taco Bell is stepping up again with a $2 meal deal.  Responding to customer concerns that value meals are “too pricey and have lost their relevance.” They also think drinks are getting too expensive.  The meal includes the choice of a chicken burrito, double-decker taco, gordita supreme or beefy five-layer burrito, plus Doritos and a medium soda.   sounds good to me — even at 9:00 am as I am writing this post.

We are always telling you to save money by not eating out, but this may change my mind.  On the other hand, I am not sure if I could eat Taco Bell every day, so I may need to throw in my peanut butter and jelly sandwich every once in a while!

Benjamins Get a Makeover

new-one-hundred-dollar-billBenjamins Get a Makeover

Get ready for a high-tech makeover of the $100 bill.  “It’s part of an effort to stay ahead of counterfeiters as technology becomes more sophisticated and more dollars flow overseas”, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says.

Benjamin Franklin is still on the C-note and Independence Hall in Philadelphia will remain on the back of the currency although both have been modified in ways aimed at making it harder to produce counterfeit copies of the bills.  Also, a disappearing Liberty Bell in an inkwell and a bright blue security ribbon composed of thousands of tiny lenses that magnify objects in mysterious ways. Move the bill and the objects move in a different direction.

But that’s not all. Tilt the note back and forth and the images will move side to side. Tilt the note side to side and the images will move up and down.

In addition, to the left of Franklin’s portrait, will be an inkwell that will change color from copper to green when the note is tilted. The movement will also make a Liberty Bell appear and disappear inside the inkwell.

The bill will be put into circulation in February of 2011.

Tuition to Increase

posted by YNF

man_cryingAre you kidding me? We are encouraged to attend college, we are told that is the “thing” to do. And yet here comes another increase in college tuition. Many college students in Utah can expect to dish out an additional 10% more for tuition next year.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, administrators and trustees at two major universities are planning hikes. That could be between 7.5 percent and 9.5 percent at the University of Utah. At Southern Utah University, they’re planning an increase between 10 and 15 percent.

Weber State University and Utah Valley University are also considering tuition hikes in the 10 percent range.

Is paying more worth it? Maybe so, college degree = better job = better income right?
