Online Purchases

Once Upon A Time, I learned how to buy things online. It was life changing, really. Sometimes this life-altering change was good - other times bad. Kind of like a superpower. I’m here to tell you of the dangers involved with making online purchases and some tips to avoid them.

One of my all-time favorite websites is called Etsy. It’s basically an online boutique where people who hand make products can sell them to people all over the world. Why do I love it so much? Cause, I’m slightly obsessed with Peter Pan (the original story by J.M. Barrie is amazing) and there’s all kinds of Peter Pan stuff on Etsy! I bought a necklack with a charm on it for $5! Chalk one up for me! On the same day I purchased this necklace I found a wallet I liked too. So, with great excitement and anticipation for my items I purchased them and camped next to my mailbox with baited breath. The necklace came. The wallet didn’t. It’s been a month and I’m still camping out by my mailbox. Unfortunately, this happens when purchasing things online. I do admit this is the first time I’ve ever had a problem with online purchases in my years of this practice, but it was bound to happen.

Here are my tips for successful online shopping:

  1. Look At The Merchant Reviews: Often times, underneath the product you’re going to buy, there’s the name of the person or business actually selling you the items (this is most commonly seen on Etsy, Amazon, Ebay, etc.). This is actually a link, if you click on it you’ll be taken to a page with their name, information on how long their account has been active and reviews of people who have bought items from them in the past. Read the reviews! The reviews will talk about how long it takes to receive items from this seller, the quality of the product, the accuracy of their order, etc. This page will give you a great idea if the person selling items is trust-worthy and honest about what they send and when they say they’ll send your items.
  2. Use Trusted Websites: Sometimes it’s still nerve-wracking to purchase items from websites with a lot of different merchants. You can find confidence in purchasing from larger companies online such as Overstock, Amazon, retail clothing stores and well-known brand names. You will have professional correspondence and they’re far more reliable. One benefit of using the larger retail online stores is the ability to return clothes and other items that don’t fit to stores near where you live or in neighboring cities.
  3. Keep a Close Eye on Your Account: Sometimes there are glitches in the electronic processes of your transaction and your account may be billed twice or not at all. Make sure if either of these happens you talk to your financial institution to get the problems resolved. There is nearly always a way.
  4. Solving the Occasional Problem: Sometimes, as in my case, you don’t receive your items. Sometimes you’re billed too many times like I mentioned. Sometimes you get a different product than what you had ordered. It’s best to always involve the merchant first and go from there. If you have contacted them first and they are not able to solve the problem on their end, go to your financial institution and see the best way to proceed. There are often forms to fill out that different departments will use to research your situation.
  5. Trust Your Gut: If you don’t feel good about a particular transaction don’t buy it! You can usually live without it and if you can’t just keep looking! If something seems off it’s because something could be. Trust yourself and use good judgment.

For me, it’s just a waiting game now. I’ve contacted the merchant, didn’t hear anything back and have just sent up my form to hopefully have the situation fixed. I will be a little more careful about not making purchases based solely on a product I’m in love with though. What are your practices for online purchases?

Beefing up your password

posted by Rebecka

These days, many of us use the internet for online transactions and to store sensitive information. Well, here are a few tips from MSN.com  on how to beef up your password to keep your senstitive information safe and secure!

By using the following tips, people will be able to create easy-to-remember passwords that follow these typical requirements: at least eight characters long and with at least three of the following character types: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and special characters.
  • Substitute numbers for letters and vice versa. (o instead of 0, 4 instead of A, 1 instead of L, E instead of 3)
  • Substitute words for numbers (one, two, three … )
  • Combine both of the above (0ne, thr33, f1ve)
  • Use capitalization in random places (bLue, happY)
  • Use special characters ( !@#$%^&*(){}[] ) to punctuate and separate words
  • Create passwords out of words, numbers or phrases you’ll remember
  • Misspell words
Using these tips, you can create memorable passwords that will be nearly impossible to guess. Here are some examples of converting memorable information into a complex password
We’ll start with some easy ones:
  • Friday becomes frYday!
  • Robert becomes #robERt#
  • 867-5309 becomes 8siX753o
  • 19 Peach Place becomes: 0ne9peacHpl!
  • I love Jill becomes: eYelov3Jill
  • My dog Fritz becomes MeyedogfrltZ
While some of these examples look nearly indecipherable, you can see how they’re not difficult to memorize — as long as you know the originating word, number or phrase and the basic methodology used to create it. By educating users on how to create strong passwords, you strengthen the security of your company, and your users will benefit additionally by have safer personal experiences with online banking and social networking.
Personally, my favorite thing to do is make a sentence like “my husband likes to sings in the shower” than my password would be “Mhl2sits” That way, even if some did happen to come across my password, it would be extremely hard to memorize because they would have no idea what it means!

A New Way to Fund & Follow Creativity

Have you ever had an idea and just thought, “I wish the economy wasn’t so bad so that I could get this idea moving and maybe make me some money.” Well, you are in LUCK!!! There is this website that has started and it making dreams come true for those with ideas that they wanted to get out there.

Kickstarter.com is the new way that people are starting to get their ideas out to the public and ALSO get people to help support them in what they want to do.

What this website does is it helps get your ideas out to the public and help you raise money for those ideas:

  1. It’s less risk for everyone. If you need $5,000, it’s tough having $2,000 and a bunch of people expecting you to complete a $5,000 project.
  2. It allows people to test concepts (or conditionally sell stuff) without risk. If you don’t receive the support you want, you’re not compelled to follow through. This is huge!
  3. It motivates. If people want to see a project come to life, they’re going to spread the word.

The funny thing is, a local band actually did this and is trying to get money to go out on tour. “For a pledge of $250, for example, the donor will receive a Denny’s waffle dinner with the band. For a pledge of $750, the band will write a song for the donor that will be performed on tour, recorded and filmed.” (sltrib.com)

So anyone can do this and anyone can contribute. What ideas do you have that you would want to get out to the rest of the world to see if they support you in your efforts? What do you think about this site and trying to get people out of their slump of not having any work for their dreams? Let us know.

Apple’s Next iPhone?

posted by Heidi

iphoneOn April 20, 2010 buzz of a new iPhone hit twitter, facebook, blogs and all different kinds of internet sites around the web. But was it true? Did someone really find the new iPhone prototype? (Check out more at http://gizmodo.com/5520164/this-is-apples-next-iphone

YES! Now, if you’re an iPhone user like myself and are in need of an upgrade, looks like you’re in luck. Apple is scheduled to release the new iPhone OS 4.0 in June of this year, will that be the same time they release the new iPhone? More than likely! So again, if you’re like myself you currently don’t have the cash to buy a new (pricey but awesome) iPhone. What do you do? SAVE!! But you don’t have much time.

So let’s assume the new iPhone will come out in mid June which would give you about 9 weeks and the current iPhone 3GS (the latest model) starts at $199 . So if you get paid bi-weekly, you could put away $40 each pay period and save enough! That sounds way better than trying to find $199 in June and if you have the money to pay for it, rather than charging it on your credit card, you won’t have to deal with buyers remorse!

Good luck!

Kindle or iPad? You into it?

posted by Jason

I was recently watching one of my favorite shows- “Glee”- and I saw a commercial for Amazon.com’s Kindle. I have never seen a commercial for those, but I think that since the new iPad came out that they feel that they have some actual competition.

What’s the hype of these tablets? Well, the Kindle has been around for a while now on amazon.com where you can get books sent directly to your tablet in minutes and not have to carry around all your books in your bag. Huge space saver and books can be less online and downloaded than if you were to by an actual hard copy.

The iPad was released recently and I am a huge fan of apple products. So when I heard about it I made sure that I got on the wait list so that I can go to the apple store to pick it up. It has all the same features as the Kindle, but with all the benefits of a computer-ish device. With the iPad you can not only read books, but you can also watch tv and video and it’s basically like a giant iPod touch or even like an iPhone.

Both have their benefits and would be great for college students that always have to carry around a ton of books. And they really aren’t that expensive.

So which one do you prefer? The iPad or the Kindle? Would you even want to get one of these if you could?

An Awesome Attitude is Everything

posted by Bryson

Alright, I’m going to be the first to admit this: I don’t always have the most positive outlook on life. I tend to have a very bad case of Eeyore-itis. It usually makes me look at the glass as half empty instead of half full. (And sometimes I see the glass as broken on the floor.) It’s not a very good way to look at life. So, what could I do to change that? I felt pretty set in my ways. I didn’t think that I was ever going to be a more positive person.

But, on January 31st of this year, something changed. I can’t honestly say that I know what it was, but I was suddenly feeling so much better about life and where I am in it. I started to focus on all the good things that were happening to me instead of the bad things. It seemed that every day, something awesome happened to me. So, I decided to make it my goal for this year to have the most awesome year ever.

Now, you’re probably wondering why I’m posting this here. Well, it’s because it’s a first for me. I’ve lived my whole life as a pessimist. So, this sudden burst of optimism is a new feeling for me. And I have to say, I quite like it. It’s very refreshing.

So, I think I’m going to challenge all of you. This year, instead of dwelling only on the things that go wrong in your life, focus on all the awesomeness in your life. It’s there, trust me. Awesome things happen everyday, you just need to look for them, or make them happen.

So, what can we all do in our lives to make this year awesome? Let’s hear some of your ideas.

Is it Spring yet?

posted by Marne

It seems like it gets a little more spring-like everyday - probably cause the sun isn’t going down at 4 in the afternoon anymore. Yesterday, the sun shining at 5 o’clock got me thinking about spring cleaning (weird I know)! I’m just curious to hear how other people go about this seemingly obligatory ritual. Do you actually have a spring cleaning? Do you donate stuff you don’t need anymore? Do you sell what you can?

I was interested in maybe earning a little extra money and selling some of the clothes that are still in good condition that I don’t wear anymore. Are there any tips for doing this? Do you know of any consignment shops to do this at?

The College Way to Get Rid of Boredom

posted by Lacey

Some days tend to drag and doing homework is not always what a student wants to do. If you want a way to fight your boredom then here are some ways to do that on a budget.
1. Campus Activities: No matter what school that you are attending, campus activities are always offered each semester. The activities involve a wide range of possibilities such as; concerts, movies, events held for students to find out more information of clubs to participate in (which most likely will include free food), some campuses even have cheap bowling or a recreation hall, and also any activities that incorporate student government planned activities, and the occasional club activity.
2. Volunteer: Volunteer at a local community center of even at an elementary school or at an animal shelter.
3. Get Fit: Go to the school gym or go with a friend to a local fitness center. Usually the gym at the school you are attending offer free gym time just by simply showing your student id card.
4. Create a blog: Creating a blog, sharing your ideas, and uploading your favorite pictures can be a fun way to spend an hour or two to get rid of some boredom. Also, tell your friends about your new blog and see what they have to say when they make responses to your posts.

A First, But Not a Happy First.

posted by Brannon

Today I had to go down to court and testify against someone who had stolen some checks and tried to cash them at America First. I saw the defendant whom I had personally called the police to have arrested, looking much different than the last time I saw this individual (about five months ago). It made me think about what must be going through this person’s mind.

I pass this story on to you let you know that no matter how hard things may get or how desperate you may think the situation is, criminal behavior is not worth it. Most likely this person will be going to jail for the next five years. There is help available to those who will ask for it. I don’t mean this to be a downer post, but it just really made me sad to think that to some people, there is no other option.

No-Car Wednesday!

“No-Car Wednesday”

If you live in any of the major Utah valleys, you are very aware of the hazardous air quality we have at this time of year. So then the question is raised, if we are aware of the problem, why don’t we do anything about it? Well Utah’s Mass Public Transportation not only is asking the question but starting a campaign called “No-Car Wednesday” to encourage people to use public transportation this Wednesday, January 20th. To learn more about the campaign, you can find them on facebook under this link.

On their facebook page, they already have 670 people committed to helping the cause. Will you be another? Would you be willing to give up your car for a day to help the air quality in Utah?
