West Haven Hawk Walk — Miss Rodeo Utah

posted by YNF

Today was the West Haven Elementary School Relay for Life Hawk Walk. There were hundreds of kids age Kindergarten through Sixth Grade who came and walked to raise money with America First Credit Union for the American Cancer Society. They were also walking in honor of their two school teachers who are cancer survivors.
The walk was real fun. Some of the laps had themes; for example skipping, walking backwards, changing directions, crazy eights, walking through the human tunnel, boogie dancing, and many others. The kids were laughing and having a good time and they were served water, punch, and cookies by America First Credit Union.

America First Credit Union is a sponsor for Miss Rodeo Utah and they do a lot to give back to the community as well. I appreciate all that they do.

What Are Your Plans for Springbreak?

Got your spring break planned yet? If you’re thinking you’d like to make a difference with your time, think about using spring break as a volunteer vacation opportunity. MTV and United Way, Habitat for Humanity and i-to-i are just a few organizations ready to put you to work over spring break.

This spring break will not be the most exciting but I was considering what my school has to offer. At the school I attend they offer spring break programs that are focused on volunteering in other states to better them by focusing on cleaning up the highways to helping children in the community. All these trips are less than $500 and consist of about a three to four day trip.

If you want to make the most out of spring break and take a different approach by making a difference then check out volunteer opportunities and see what your school has to offer!

My First Time Working In A Nursing Home

posted by Brandie

When I was a senior in High School I took a CNA class. My dream was to become a nurse and I was so excited to start! I had heard that you had to put your time in at a Nursing Home before becoming a nurse, but I just kept telling myself I would get hired right on in a hospital. The first day of class, the teacher told us in order to pass the class, we would have to do clinicals at a Nursing Home. I didn’t know what to expect there, but I had heard my fair share of stories and it did not sound fun!  As the semester drew to a close, the nursing home clinicals were approaching. We had to sign up for which Nursing Home we wanted to go to and what days would work best for us.  To make the experience more enjoyable, we had to be there at 6:30 in the morning, and work for a few hours, then go back to school for the rest of the day. The dreadful day arrived and I carpooled with my best friend to meet our fate.  The first day was pretty much a blur. All I really remember is that I got fruit loops spit into my face. Needless to say, when the shift was over, my friend and I left in tears. In class we heard that a girl was cleaning dentures and she threw up, so I decided my time spent working there wasn’t too bad. In the end we got to know a lot of the people there and it was sad to have to tell everyone goodbye. Have you ever had an interesting experience volunteering for something for the first time?

Hawk Walk for Cancer

posted by YNF

Thomas, Ryan and Blake from the YNF crew helped keep kids walking this morning at the annual Hawk Walk for cancer at West Haven Elementary.  This is the third annual walk in which America First has teamed up with West Haven to help raise money for the American Cancer Society.   Along with money raised by the students, America First donated $5 for each of the kids who participated in the walk.hawkwalk
