Take a Closer Look at Your Finances
Get some advice from your parents or someone who has lived on their own about costs and budgeting. Be sure to remember the basics you will now have to buy: groceries, cleaning supplies, and even toilet paper.
Looking for a place, Not a Palace
Remember, you're looking for a place, not a palace. Determine what is most important to you and make a list of priorities. For example, do you need to be close to your work or public transportation? Is security or other amenities (swimming pool, workout facility) important to you?
The Actual Cost of Renting
There is no flat rate! If you see an apartment for $600 a month, the first question you should ask is what that covers. Because things like utilities, garbage, water, etc. can really make living away from home expensive. You may also need to pay the first and last months' rent up front, and possibly put forward a security deposit.
Roommate Awareness
Having a roommate is a great way to lower expenses, because he or she can split the cost of living, help around the house, and even buy groceries. But be warned that the wrong roommate can cause you unbelievable headaches. Make sure it's someone you trust and someone who will work with you.
One More Thing
And one last reminder for going out on your own: always leave your nest on good terms with your parents ... You never know when you may have to move back in!
