A penny saved...is a penny you can spend later.

There are a lot of expenses draining your paycheck and it can be hard to stash some cash away for those rainy days. Here are some clever ways to save some money and fill up your piggy bank.
  • Keep it secret. Keep it safe.
Put your precious money in a safe place, where you won't be tempted to dip into it, like a Dedicated Savings account.
  • Set Up Automatic Withdrawal
AFCU can automatically transfer a predetermined amount of money out of your paycheck and into your savings account (like magic).
  • Look into a 401(k)
A portion of your wages can be deposited into your 401(k) account for retirement. Sometimes your employer will match the amount you put in (money for nothin').
  • Get a library card.
Why rent when you can borrow? The library offers DVDs and books that are yours for the taking (just bring them back on time).
  • Learn to Cook.
Eating out can be expensive. Eat in and remember to tip your server (put the tip in your savings).
  • Buy it used
A second-hand lamp can light up a room just as well as a new one (plus, it's retro).

If you need help with a savings plan maybe you could look into a dedicated savings. That is the only way that I am able to save and that extra money has really come in handy for me.

One thing that i have done is opened a dedicated savings. I started off just putting $10 in each pay check. I have now worked my way up to putting $50 in each check. I do all my bugdeting with that already taken out of my check. It builds up after awhile.

This is such a hard thing to get used to. 10% seems so small. I can't wait until I can start seeing that number get a little more rewarding!

I have noticed as we move in to the electronic age we swipe more often than we know it and end up getting in trouble for it. I have not only started to really watch what I spend but also every time I have a few extra cents in my checking from my purchase I transfer it over to my savings were I wont use it. it adds up REAL fast

The best way I learned about money; spending, saving... etc was to move out on my own. Best thing I ever did. I learned so much and was prepared for married life, well at least in the money dept.

I learned a good lesson about saving when my friend's husband lost his job. They had to live off their savings for a few months before he found another job. I've tried to be better about saving ever since.

Remember: The amount of money you save is not as important as getting into the habit of saving! Once you have a set habit, watch that money grow!
